The New York Dolls / The Philistines This was one to tell the grandkids about. First off the
Philistines. Glen Matlocks new outfit. Well worth a watch. It is good
to see that he can still knock out a number or two. Whilst oft derided
by Johnny Rotten as the "New Monkeys" after the Sex Pistols, I've always
thought more of his output as a Punked up version of the Small Faces.
On to the main act. Being too young (yes honestly) to have seen the Dolls
first time arounds and having avoided the reunion at the Meltdown Festival
for fear of being let down (what a fool), I decided to chance them at
the Town and Country. What a band, I was already rockin when David Johansen
announced "The job of an artist is to inspire and our inspiration was
Janis Joplin" before launching into a raucous "take another little piece
of my heart baby". That was worth the admission money. Syl is looking
good, the rest of the band rocked. A tribute medley to the Late Great
Johnny Thunders was a treat started by "You can't put your arms around
a memory" All the way to the encore, their theme tune "Personality Crisis".
The final number just showed they still have it. From the new anthem,
"Got to Get away From Tommy". I went home knowing I'd seen a proper rock
and roll gig!!!!!! |

The False Dots / Kate Nash Well it wouldn't do to review my own band, so I'll just review Kate here.
If you haven't heard of her check out her myspace. All I can say is she
is one of the most exciting and original singers I've seen for years.
Songs such as Dickhead show a real wit and sophistication, whilst having
the angst that only an 18 year old can really muster. Her voice is great,
and she is a really engaging performer. I've seen hundreds of gigs at
the Sports Club, but I can honestly say she sang better than any of them.
Check her out soon as next year you'll be paying a lot of money to see
her. |

Watling Festival 11 Bands, bright sunshine, what more could you want for £1 admission.
Highlights 2 Kings - Theatrical rock with a rather continatl flavour.
For those with more hardcore tastes Spitting Blood knocked out a set forged
in the foundry of hell !!! Afaktor gave the usual show - frontman Fil
as wild as ever. The other bands, all well worth a mention - FIRESTORM
* THE RUNNERS * GINGERBREAD MEN * CHORDLESS * BUNGALOW ZEN * AHYMSA *
RANDOM HEROES * LEVEL HEADED - gave a great day a truly rock and roll
feel. Ted Smith |

The PoleCats Rockabilly heaven at the premier Rock N Roll venue in London. The Polecats
were always a band to take chances. Jeepster and "John I'm Only Dancing"
were certainly highlights for me. I've always had a soft spot for Big
Green Car. Tim hasn't changed a bit, Boz looks older, wiser and plays
a mean lick. This was a gig to savour. The décor of the Ace is like taking
atrip back in the Tardis. The audience look like extras from a 50's film.
The beer is cheap and the music raw. If I have a criticism, the sound
system could've been better very middling, but why split hairs on a great
night. |

| Afaktor are looking for a 2nd guitarist. Call Fil on 020 8906 9991 | We would also like some pictures of even cartoons for the site, as some of you have said it needs a bit of brightening up. Unfortunately they must not contain anything that we wouldn't want some of your younger customers seeing. |

What is E=mhmc² all about then? This is the online magazine for Mill Hill Music Complex. It gives news,
views and reviews of what is going on at Mill Hill Music Complex, what
the musicians who use us are up to and anything else we think is relevant.
To make it work we need feedback from you (and we don't mean from the
PA systems). |
